Heckin’ Bamboozled

Right after I wrote a blog post on how to survive finals week, I caught the flu and was down and out for the last week.

I’ve never had the flu before, but when I woke up Tuesday morning in extreme pain I knew something wasn’t right. After visiting urgent care with a 101 fever, I was sent home to rest. My mom zoomed up with pupper Harper to help me recuperate in preparation for this week-finals week. Aka, death week.

I didn’t do much the first few days because I was super weak, but when I did get to leave my apartment for some brief field trips on Friday and Saturday this is what I did:

Pike’s Soda Shop

I was lucky that I had an appetite during this sick week. I’m told that the flu often leaves you without it, but I was the exact opposite. Pretty sure I gained five pounds this week.

Mom took me to Pike’s, the cutest old-fashioned soda shop in South End. All I wanted was salty, delicious comfort food. Honey pecan fried chicken with mashed potatoes and broccoli casserole did the trick. Side note- Pike’s has AMAZING food, and you can sit right at the counter and order a milkshake. Cute date night idea, eh?

My throat hurt, and after we walked to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams next door. I’m obsessed with Jeni’s- never have I ever had anything so amazing as that “ooey-gooey butter cake”. I had that (obviously) and their seasonal peppermint with white chocolate freckles. Made me feel a heck of a lot better!

My energy levels fluctuated quite a bit during this time, and the next day I feel like I had taken two steps back and completely awful. I practically begged my mom to let me leave my apartment, because I was getting cabin fever and wanted out.

Lang Van field trip was a go.

I felt like I was going to fall asleep in my bowl of pho when I got it, but after eating it I felt darn near cured! It was so good, I went back today with friends! I feel back to normal! Pho has healing powers!

I was also told that my pronunciation of “Pho Chin Nam” was pretty spot on so I am also pumped about that.

Finally on the last day of Flu-mas I rose from the dead (literally) at 6am on the dot and drove to the Carolina Place mall for the Bath and Body works candle sale. All candles are normally $25, but they have a once a year special that for one day only they are 75% off. My mom and aunt stayed up till midnight ordering candles, looking for one in particular that was taken out of commission years ago but brought back. Carolina Place had them, so I was the candle hero and bought nine “French Baguettes”. They smell like fresh baked bread, it’s crazy!

All in all, I bought 22 candles. Mom if you’re reading this, sorry.

Sad but funny side note, I was so weak still that it took me six rest breaks carrying my bags back to my car. They were heavy.

I’ll leave y’all with this- the flu sucks! But I’m back baby!

  1. Good to hear you’re back! Even the flu can’t keep you down for long! And isn’t it wonderful to have your mom close enough to help?! Can’t wait to smell those French Baguette candles! Merry Christmas Sweets😘
